SAMPLE DISPUTE LETTER FOR CREDIT REPORTS
Below is a simple sample letter that you should use
as reference when
disputing errors on your credit report.

To Whom It May Concern:
A recently ordered copy of my credit report reflects
inaccurate and/or outdated information being reported by
your company. This letter is a request that you
investigate the ensuing items and take action within 30
days of your receipt of this letter, in accordance with
the Fair Credit Reporting Act, 15 USC section 1681i.
Enclosed is a copy of my credit report as well as
necessary materials that will support my claim.
** The sections below should be utilized as needed. You should fill in
the proper indicated in parentheses:
The account below should not be listed on my credit
report:
(creditor name, account#, explanation/reason why the
account should be eliminated: i.e. outdated, not you,
etc.)
The following inquiry should not be listed on my credit
report:
(creditor name, date of inquiry, explanation/reason why
the inquiry should be eliminated: i.e. older than 2
years, not authorized, other)
My personal information is incorrect:
(you should list the incorrect information and provide
them with the corrected info)
The account below is listed incorrectly and needs to be
fixed:
(creditor name, account#, explanation/description of
what is erroneous and how it should be amended)
The account below has been closed as per my request, but
is not being reported correctly on my credit report:
(creditor name, account#, evidence of closure)
Once the information has been corrected by your company,
I would like you to send me an updated, corrected credit
report to me and to anyone else that has asked for a
copy of my credit file in the last six months. If
your company does not take action to my appeal within 30
days, I will assume that the information is not able to
be verified by your company. Therefore the information
should be immediately removed by your company.
